Description: Substantial Victorian Gothic Residence on c. 29 Acres For Sale By Private Treaty.
Built by Captain Arthur Robert Costello in 1864. The house was designed by John Mc Curdy who also designed the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. The style is High Victorian Gothic, built with stone interspersed with bands of red brick on a split level plan.
The windows are painted and there is an octagonal corner tower. Originally the estate was 8551 acres but the Land Commission bought it in 1885. Costello retained the residence on 315 acres.
In 1892 Father’s O’ Hara and Keaveney, then serving at the Cathedral, bought it. The land was divided and sold to local farmers.
“Edmondstown College “ – the diocesan college moved into the house in 1893, until a more “suitable” building could be found. St. Nathy’s college moved to the old military barracks in 1896 and Edmondstown was vacant until 1911 and when Bishop Morrisroe was appointed bishop he moved in there. Since then it houses diocesan offices, diocesan archives and provides a residence for the bishop of Achonry.
The residence now stands on 29 acres of mature grounds in rolling countryside and at the end of a tree lined avenue.
